HISTORY & LEADERSHIP

Roland R. Guy, President & CEO of Service Plus Aquatics Inc. (SPA Inc.), has been actively involved in the aquatics industry since his teenaged years, falling in love with ‘all things water’ first as a lifeguard, and then as a competitive swimmer.

Within the inaugural years of Service Plus Aquatics Inc., circa 1989, Roland’s primary focus for the Firm at that time was Lifeguard Management, with his office operations being conducted from the confines of his mother’s basement. While attending the University of Wilfrid Laurier (located in Ontario, Canada), Roland expanded his scope of business to include pool/aquatic service, supply, and renovation, giving his Firm added ‘presence’ within the highly competitive aquatic industry. Upon graduation – graduating with an Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Post-Grad in Business – he decided to undergo an apprenticeship program at the Niagara College, and add ‘licensed’ pool and spa installation and service technician, to his roster of credentials. From there, he established (and later sold) a Firm called “Aquatic Technologies”, specializing in a resin pool coating system. He also established (and later sold) a company called “Data Cat Corp”, which made pool chemical automation communication equipment. The implications of having sold these two (2) associated Firms were revealed favourably, as he was then able to focus and hone in on the expansion efforts of Service Plus Aquatics Inc. (his first passion-driven venture). By solely focussing on SPA Inc., his Firm grew exponentially in a very short span of time, and he was recognized/awarded the National award from Profit Magazine, as being one of Canada’s fastest growing Firms in 2004.

Within this 2004 timeframe, while maintaining a strong service and supply business, the Firm also expanded into pool automation and specialized in major restorations. Further to this, SPA Inc. had also expanded into new construction of commercial pools, and added the additional layers of providing a complete design/build and fully engineered design drawings of pools, spas, water features, fountains, steam rooms and saunas.

In 2013, Spa Inc. acquired Tropics North (TN). Tropics North is a manufacturer and designer of prefabricated water features, which in turn allowed Service Plus Aquatics Inc. to expand their future pool and spa services to include the development of a line of custom prefabrication. These custom/prefabricated pool and spas have been shipped throughout Canada, and they have collectively been recognized and the proud recipients of, a number of prestigious National Aquatic awards.

Today, Service Plus Aquatics Inc. is known as the industry leader in the commercial pool business, with specialization in class B suspended pool applications. Having won over 75 National and International awards for their work, they remain on the leading edge of new technologies, and the leading edge of unique design concepts.

Roland has personally authored a number of articles on pools/spas/water features, and regularly entertains public speaking engagements, providing education/training on various aquatic-related topics. He is also involved with a myriad of government-related reviews, providing feedback as it pertains to the legislation impacting pools and spas.
